Annual
A plant that completes its life cycle in one year or a season. Annuals are known for their hardiness, their ease of growing and of their bright and vibrant colors.
Arboretum
A landscaped space where trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are cultivated for scientific study, educational purposes, and to foster appreciation of plants.
Axil
The angle, typically acute, formed by the leaf and the stem where they join which is the area between a leaf and the stem from which the leaf actually arises.
Bract
A leaf-like structure that grows below a flower or cluster of flowers that is often colorful. Colored bracts attract pollinators and are often mistaken for petals. Poinsettia and flowering dogwood are examples of plants with prominent bracts.
Flower
The flower can be compared to the reproductive organ of animals and humans. However the flower contains both the female and male parts, but some are incomplete, having only one or the other.
Perennial
A plant that dies down to the ground during winter and survives to grow again each spring.
